Assessment plan
Written summary - assessment plan
My plan for these projects is to introduce the principles of design and help students learn how to use them in their own creative process. I will start with a discussion about what makes an artwork "good" or "bad" in order to help them understand that these design principles are not strict rules that artists have to follow in order to create "good" art. Artistic preference varies greatly from person to person, (not all artworks need to feel balanced, well-proportioned, or harmonious), and these design principles are merely useful tools to be used when desired. From there the class will move on to taking an online quiz about the definitions of the design principles learned in class; this way I can understand who paid attention and who remembers. From that point on all the projects are hands on because the best way to improve in art is to practice, and their work will help me evaluate where they're at individually. Drawings #1 and #2 will help the students understand how to incorporate design elements into their own work, and how to manipulate these principles in a way that suits their style. Painting #1 helps them to recognize how another artist is using design elements and to emulate them. With Painting #2 the students have an opportunity to show off how they can blend a created image with a pre-existing image, which will further help to solidify their design skills. And finally, the Final Project will have a lot less restrictions than the previous projects, giving the students space to experiment with their own style and explore different materials. All of these hands-on projects will provide many opportunities for assessing their understanding of design principles.
Below is the link to the online quiz which will help students recall the definitions for each design principle.

assignment directions
For this project, students will need to begin by purchasing a small, cheap picture from a thrift store. They will modify this picture in some way and make it their own work of art, and also write a small summary about how they modified it, how they used the elements of design to help them, and why they chose to modify the picture in this way. Pictures can't be any smaller than 5" x 7", but they're allowed to go bigger as long as they get it done by the due date. Students can modify their image using paints and collage materials. This project will help to further improve their use of design elements as they try to blend a new image with a pre-existing one. Students are expected to modify an image enough that their time and effort can be clearly seen (can't just paint something too simple, like a little bird in the sky, and call it modified!)
